Kayaking in Huntsville

Just because the summer season is coming to an end, does not mean that you have to say goodbye to all the water activities. In fact, here in Huntsville many residents enjoy a weekend heading down the river in a kayak. If you are new to the Madison or Huntsville area, then you will definitely want to partake in this fun outdoor activity this fall.

While you certainly can put in and take out on your own with all your own gear, the Huntsville area has several outfitters that you can use to take a tour on the river. These tour groups can make your day a lot more convenient as they will drop you off at the put-in location as well as provide gear if you do not have your own. Checkout any of these commercial outfitters in Huntsville the next time you want to venture with your family and friends on the river.

The River, Tributaries, & More

Before we mention the outfitters themselves, it is a good rule of thumb to be aware of your surroundings, especially when venturing outdoors. There are over sixty miles of rivers to traverse on. You definitely will want to find the top-notch kayaking spots closest to where you live. If you are closer to Decatur, then you will probably venture towards the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge. For those who live in south Huntsville, Ditto Landing is the perfect place to take off. Both the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge and Ditto Landing are near different spots of the Tennessee River. Another area that is a prime spot to kayak is the Paint Rock River, which is actually just a tributary of the Tennessee River. Of course, another tributary worth listing that is a favorite among locals is the Flint River.

Outfitters

There are several outfitters up here in Huntsville, but two of the best operating outfitters are Brown Bear LLC Canoe and Kayak and North Alabama Canoe and Kayak (NACK). Both service the Flint River. The Brown Bear operates on the river from Oscar Patterson Road to Ryland Pike. If you are wanting to put in at Ryland Pike and get out at Little Cove Road, then NACK may be your best bet. Brown Bear is in Huntsville, while North Alabama Canoe and Kayak operations technically take place in Brownsboro. Both outfitters have an amazing staff that are helpful and friendly.

A little tip: After a cool morning on the river with either Brown Bear LLC Canoe and Kayak or North Alabama Canoe and Kayak, you will definitely want to make a stop at the Flint River Coffee Company. Their hot, artisanal lattes are not to be missed.

If you want to make your kayak trip less of a chore, then be sure you take advantage of the services by Brown Bear LLC Canoe and Kayak or North Alabama Canoe and Kayak.
